Bryce Boyer 400 at the Brickyard: Coming this summer?
April 30, 2014
Summit County Fire Warden Bryce Boyer is one of five "local hero" finalists to have NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 named in his honor. Boyer, a huge NASCAR fan, was nominated through Canadian whisky Crown Royal’s "Your Hero’s Name Here" program.
The Brickyard 400, to be held July 27 in Indianapolis, will celebrate heroes such as military service members, firefighters, police officers and first responders. Boyer said is "very honored" to be a finalist.
"Apparently someone sent in a nomination for [me]," Boyer said. "It’s nice that someone recognized [me] and that it got put in. It’s not necessarily what I do [this job] for I do it to make sure our county is safe."
Boyer, 49, from Wanship, has been the Summit County Fire Warden for the past 11 years. During last August’s Rockport fire, he served as the incident commander and worked with crews around the clock to suppress the blaze, which burned over 1,400 acres and destroyed 15 structures.
Boyer, whose favorite NASCAR driver is Tony Stewart, is excited to go to the race in July, when all five finalists will be flown on an all-expense-paid trip to Indianapolis on July 26. He said he usually goes to the NASCAR race in Las Vegas every year, but never has access to the drivers before the race.
The winner of Crown Royal’s "Your Hero’s Name Here" contest will get to deliver the trophy with his or her name on it to the race winner in Victory Lane. Individuals can vote for one of the five finalists on NASCAR’s website until June 2. Voting is allowed once per day.

Boyer wants to ensure that county residents are prepared for this year’s wildfire season, saying that it’s possible another incident similar to the Rockport fire could happen this summer. He also stressed the importance of creating defensible space around one’s home, which can be crucial in preventing the spread of wildfires. He said residents should visit summitwildfires.com throughout the season to stay up-to-date on wildfire conditions and advisories.
