Dog bite leads to a fight at Rockport

A 49-year-old Ogden man allegedly assaulted the owner of a dog that bit him and his dog this weekend at Rockport State Park.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office call logs, a fight erupted Saturday night at approximately 10:30 p.m. between two men after one of them was bitten by the other’s pit bull.

Deputies, State Park officials and Animal Control responded to the scene on Rockport Road.

The off-leash pit bull bit the man and his leashed dog at their camp site. When he confronted the owner, a fight broke out. He was cited for assault and intoxication and released. He refused medical attention at the scene, but ended up getting 11 stitches in his leg as a result of the bite, according to Delores Ovard, field supervisor for Summit County Animal Control.

Deputies arrested the owner of the dog, a 40-year-old Salt Lake City man, for unrelated charges, including two active warrants out of Salt Lake County. He also possessed marijuana and paraphernalia. He was booked into the Summit County Jail.

The owner faces several citations related to the incident, including a $100 fine for an animal at large and a $500 fine for a dog attacking a person or animal. Animal Control took possession of the dog and he is being quarantined for 10 days.
