L’Oakley to kick off Saturday

Artist Haulsey to perform

The L’Oakley Grown Community Market will have its inaugural opening this Saturday, June 29, at the Cattlemen’s Hall at 911 W. Center St. in Oakley. The L’Oakley Market is co-executive directed by sisters Kate Boyd and Kimberly Kuehn.

Boyd is glad that residents of Eastern Summit County can finally have a market to call their own. Not only will the market provide a venue for non-profits and area vendors, but it will also headline local musicians on a weekly basis.

"I really tried to reach out to find Eastern Summit County’s musicians," Boyd said. "It’s nice to see the locals out that way having a forum for themselves because some of the other markets are just too big."

Kuehn is known for being behind the scenes for such programs as the Park Silly Sunday Market, the L’Oakley Market and the Summit County Fair. Boyd stresses that she wants L’Oakley to be a market that those outside of Park City in Summit County can call their own.

Venues such as Park Silly can be intimidating and more difficult to get into, Boyd said, and the L’Oakley Market will provide a local and more attainable environment for artists from the area. The first musician that will headline the weekly market is Haulsey. Boyd knew she wanted her to perform at the market the day she saw her play, likening her voice to the artist Jewel.

"She’s actually born and raised in Oakley," Boyd said. "She went to South Summit High School. I booked her right that day."

Many arts and crafts vendors will also be present at the market.

"We’ve got a lot of artists and crafters that this will be their first market," Boyd said.

Non-profit groups Summit Community Solar and Utahans Against Hunger will be hosting an education hour during the event as well.

Another important aspect of the market is that vendors’ booths will accept food stamps. Individuals can swipe their EBT card at a point-of-sale device and receive $1 tokens that are redeemable at the booths.

The market will take place weekly until August 10 with a different artist scheduled to perform each week.
