RAP tax grant recommendations to be made

Summit County is set to announce its recommendations for the yearly Recreation, Arts and Parks (RAP) tax recreation grants at this Wednesday’s Summit County Council meeting. The RAP tax grant committee has chosen $1.1 million in projects across the county to fund recreational projects.
The percentage of funds allocated to each region correspond to population statistics, with the Snyderville Basin garnering $528,000 (48 percent), Park City $231,000 (21 percent), South Summit $198,000 (18 percent) and North Summit $143,000 (13 percent), according to county documents.
The largest project being recommended for funding is a pedestrian and wildlife underpass at US 40 near Silver Summit Junction. As proposed through a joint Park City and Snyderville Basin application, the underpass project would receive $400,000 from the county. The Utah Department of Transportation will also be funding the project, and additional money will be provided by a Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) Grant.
Another joint Park City/Basin project is $104,532 for re-plastering and resurfacing of swimming pools at the Ecker Hill Middle School.

The committee also suggested granting to North Summit money for two projects: a resurfacing of the North Summit High School track ($104,000) and infrastructure for Henefer’s Pocket Park, which will house the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum.

The North Summit Recreation Special Service District had requested $500,000 to make additional improvements to the Coalville Park. The committee did not recommend giving the project any funding, however, as the Recreation District has roughly $189,000 unspent from a 2012 RAP tax award.
Two large projects recommended for funding in South Summit include $76,833 for interior building finishes to the Oakley Rodeo Arena and $89,760 for construction upgrades to the South Summit Aquatic and Fitness Center. The grant recommendations for both projects was roughly half the requested amounts.
Park City Municipal’s two grant requests that received nods from the committee include $25,000 in new fitness equipment for the Park City Municipal Area Recreation Center and $11,000 for an electric utility vehicle for the Municipal Golf Course.
The recommendations of the RAP Tax Recreation Grant Committee will be presented to the County Council at 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Summit County Courthouse, 60 N. Main Street in Coalville.
