Teachers return to school early for training
August 17, 2010
Summit County teachers have a shorter summer vacation than their students. Teachers return to the classroom early to prepare for the students’ arrival. Park City School District teachers return to school Aug. 23-25 for three teacher contract days.
The focus of teacher contract days this year is student-teacher relationships and student safety in the schools. Meetings consist of three full days of training to prepare teachers for the coming school year. Monday trainings include: professional development for elementary education; technology training for secondary education; Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, which helps teachers address specific needs of all students, and meetings for English as a second language instructors. Tuesday trainings include CPR and Automated External Defibrillator certification and special education trainings. All trainings continue through Wednesday and help teachers prepare for a safe environment for students to return to school, according to Superintendent Ray Timothy.
Teachers don’t have much time to ready their classrooms during contract days. Instead, they have the option of preparing their classrooms this week and will receive a stipend for their time. Elementary teachers are the most likely to take advantage of this stipend, Timothy said.
The school principals oversee the events of the contract days to ensure teachers receive all necessary trainings.
