Town Race Series returns to Park City

This year, the Town Race Series at the Eagle Race Arena at Park City Mountain Resort made a small change.

Instead of starting the giant slalom competitions at 4 p.m., the start time was moved up to 3 p.m. so more skiers could race in the daylight.

In the end, it was another successful event, with Jessica Kelley winning the women’s platinum division and John Buchar earning a victory in the men’s platinum division.

Kelley finished with a combined two-run time of 47.51 seconds, half a second ahead of second-place finisher Jenny Lathrop (48.01). Abbi Lathrop finished third.

Buchar finished his runs in 46.35 seconds, .08 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Adam Cole. Joe Dunn rounded out the men’s podium.

Kelley said she likes the challenge of the races, considering how many world-class skiers the Park City area boasts.

"It’s probably one of the most competitive town races in the country," she said. "It’s a great event to get everyone together."

Park City Ski Team director Jesse Hunt agreed, adding that the togetherness is what makes the event special.

"It’s the camaraderie," he said. "They come out, take a run down the mountain, stand at the (leader)boards and tell jokes and have a good time. It’s a good opportunity for people to get together and celebrate the sport."

He said the Town Race Series is special in that it allows racers of all age groups and experience levels to come out to the slopes and ski.

"There’s a pretty strong Masters group that comes out," he said. "But outside of that, there’s another group of people that don’t get a lot of access (to ski race events). It’s fun to put together an event that lets those people get out there."

Kelley said she’s looking forward to competing in all the races in 2013.

"In the past, I was only able to do one race a year and it bummed me out," she said.

Sloane Johnson (gold category), Lori Stevenson (silver) and Wina Sturgeon (bronze) were the other women’s division winners.

Brett Sullivan (gold), Alex Foley (silver) and Tom Connor (bronze) led the way in the other men’s categories.

The next town race will be on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. The third race will take place on March 6 and the final race is on March 20.
