Train body, mind at Livewell Fitness
Janet Myshrall sees enough injured people at the physical therapy clinic she works at in Salt Lake, so when she comes home to Park City she goes to her other job keeping people out of physical therapy clinics by acting as a personal trainer with a focus on health education.
"It’s a personal training with a strong educational component," said Myshrall, owner of Livewell Fitness. "The educational component really provides longevity in how people will utilize the experience."
Myshrall, who moved to Park City from Salt Lake three years ago, has been running the business for just under a year and said so far she has had a wonderful response.
"We have a lot of people who are really motivated to live well and stay healthy and this gives them the opportunity to do that," she said. "We’re getting a great response already. People are ready to learn, to be educated and to take care of themselves. They don’t want to have to lean on the medical community."
Although she leaves the physical therapy for the clinic, many of Myshrall’s clients have back or muscular problems that, because of her background in therapy, she is familiar with and able to help.
"The program is based on what I see clinically," she said. "I train in the safest and most efficient ways to address the concerns I see everyday in the clinic. It’s a program of core strengthening, resistance training, flexibility and education that empowers people to gain benefits beyond the scope of just a great workout."
Beyond being a physical therapist and personal trainer, Myshrall is also a trained yoga instructor, a coach for many sports including dry land training for cross country skiers and also plans on taking the Women’s Health Specialist Exam when it becomes available in 2007.
"I use yoga frequently in the clinical setting as well as in training because the benefits are so applicable with the population with which I work," she said. "I really feel it’s much more empowering for people. My coaching and training has a focus on teaching awareness of what the body is doing and that comes from my yoga background. And although I’m not a nutritionist, I will talk to people about basic nutrition as well."
Myshrall, 45, graduated with a degree in physical therapy from the University of Utah in 1996 and currently works at Canyon Rim Physical Therapy in Salt Lake where she practices orthopedics and women’s health.
"I really enjoy working with the women’s population," she said. "The information alone is very empowering for them. Once they have a better understanding on what’s going on with their bodies they’ll have a better understanding of what they can do. It’s very exciting."
For a typical workout, Myshrall goes to client’s home (although with larger groups can also run sessions from her home) and spends 75 minutes going through each part of the body, starting with core abdominal muscles, and teaches clients to be aware of what their bodies are doing. She then moves toward resistance training in the same session.
"At first glace, it may involve seemingly easy movements in a plank-pose position, however, upon proper execution, you can immediately recognize that the workout is not as easy as it looks," she said. "You’ll immediately feel the results in your muscles."
Billed as "Park City’s in-home personal training," Myshrall said she hopes clients feed from her energy and love for life and health. She and her husband are competitive Nordic skiers, and hopes her two children, 4 and 7, maintain a healthy lifestyle and seek education about their bodies throughout their lives.
"I was really marketing this as much more than a personal training business," she said "What I offer is much more than just a great workout, and, regardless if people seek their personal training service from me or someone else, they need to seek education that will help them in the long run."
