Trash hauler denied fuel request

The price of unleaded gasoline topped $4 per gallon as the Summit County Commission considered whether the county’s trash hauler should receive money to offset its higher fuel costs.

"I understand the commission’s reluctance to consider a fuel surcharge," Summit County Public Works Administrator Kevin Callahan told the panel recently in Coalville.

Allied Waste Services, the trash hauler, was told it would not receive extra money from the county.

"We’re going to work with them," Callahan said. "We’re kicking around some ideas about how they might be able to modify their routing and some of their services."

Allied Waste’s budget request didn’t "fly whatsoever," County Commissioner Bob Richer said.

"We all knew gas was going up That’s why we didn’t agree to a fuel surcharge," Richer told Allied Waste officials about a contract the county and company recently negotiated. "You can ask I don’t blame you for trying."

Allied Waste is a national company that performed well financially in the first quarter of 2008, Richer explained.

"All of our taxpayers have to absorb it, just like you do," Richer told Allied officials. "That’s why we had a contract You’re a multibillion dollar company."

County Commissioner Sally Elliott agreed.

"It’s not our problem," she said. "We negotiated this contract in good faith, knowing that the cost of fuel was going to go up."
