Two Salt Lake men died Friday afternoon when their car smashed into the back of a flatbed trailer, severing the passenger compartment. The accident took place on Interstate 80 in the westbound lanes near the Jeremy Ranch exit.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the two men were driving westbound in a 2001 Jetta behind a slow-moving Freightliner tractor-trailer that was towing a large forklift on a 50-foot flatbed. The driver of the Jetta failed to slow down in time to avoid colliding with the flatbed.
The driver, Raul Lopez, age 47, and his passenger, Emilio Martinez, 27, were reportedly killed on impact. The men were Salt Lake City residents.
