Under 21 scene: Camping in the Uintas

Large evergreens and pristine lakes characterize the surreal beauty of the Uinta Mountains. Avid lake-seeker Andrew Price explores the Uinta wilderness " two or three times a week."

Price says it takes about 40 minutes to get to "huge lakes that are so clear that you can see the fish from shore." His two favorite lakes in the area are Washington and Trial Lake. "When I go on these day trips, I only bring a map and some goggles and I find myself exploring for hours," he says.

Price recently went on a weekend camping trip with friends. "I couldn’t believe it was only $6 for a three-day pass to camp with four other friends," he says.

Kasey Coyle, one of the weekend campers, described her experience as "an escape from the everyday setting that we’ve grown accustomed to."

Coyle believes that one of the most crucial supplies for a good camping trip is a guitar. "It’s always fun to engage everyone in one place around the campfire," she says, adding, "and I just like to show off." She believes the best campfire songs "are the funny and inappropriate ones."

Also, it is always important to not forget safety in the wilderness. "Warm clothing, a compass, maps, water and a cell phone are key factors to having a safe trip," says Price.

Coyle adds, "Always bring a first aid kit," just in case. For more camping do’s and don’t’s go to http://www.treadlightly.org.
