Vail eliminates 42 jobs at Canyons

Vail Resorts has consolidated a number of staff positions this week as part of its takeover of the management of Canyons Resort.

According to Vail spokesperson Kelly Ladyga, 42 positions out of a total workforce of 1,800 at Canyons Resort have been eliminated.

In an email to The Park Record, Ladyga stated, "The loss of jobs, no matter how small the number of people impacted, is always difficult and is not something that we take lightly."

She emphasized that most of the resort’s other employees would be retained and will officially become Vail Resorts employees on July 1.

Ladyga explained that the changes were implemented to "create alignment with our other mountain resorts and entities to ensure operating efficiencies moving forward."

The employees whose positions were eliminated were based in Park City. Ladyga added that the company does not anticipate additional cutbacks but "we will continue to evaluate Canyons operations and there may be additional adjustments required in the


Mike Goar will continue as general manager of Canyons Resort.

On May 29, Vail Resorts announced that it had leased operations of Canyons from Talisker Corporation. The current lease hands operation of the resort over to Vail for a term of 50 years for approximately $25 million per year. Vail also has the option to renew the lease in 50 year increments.

When the announcement was made in May, Blaise Carrig, an executive at Vail, met with Canyons employees in Park City to reassure them that most would keep their jobs, but he did say Vail would reassess some staffing levels. Carrig was not available for comment on this week’s layoffs.
