Walmart to host nutrition seminar

Nancy Taylor, pharmacy manager at the Walmart Supercenter at Kimball Junction, was inspired to do something for the community after she attended a wellness conference a couple of years ago.

"All of us were challenged to take something from the conference that we thought we could instill in our families and communities to help improve health and wellness," Taylor said during an interview with The Park Record.

When she returned to Park City, Taylor started making flyers about the different states of diseases that contained general information about high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

"I attached them to pay-check stubs and posted them in the Walmart break room," she said. "That’s where I began."

Taylor then decided to do something bigger and came up with the idea of hosting a free nutrition community education seminar that would feature a guest speaker, education sessions and a tour of the store.

The event will take place on Wednesday, June 27, at 7 p.m.

"Since Walmart has become a supercenter last December, we thought presenting a quarterly community event would be a great idea, and we thought nutrition would be a great topic to start things off," Taylor said. "I wanted to show and let community members know we are here for them and we want to be their health and wellness advocate."

Taylor feels the store’s location will help attract people to these seminars.

"Our community isn’t just Park City residents, but Summit County residents," she said. "People from Oakley, Coalville and Henefer shop here and we want to give back to them and thought education would be a great way to do that."

The June 27 seminar will run between 60 and 90 minutes.

"We didn’t want to make it extremely long," Taylor said. "We wanted people to be able to come in, learn and leave and still be able to what they needed to do in the evening."

The guest speaker will be Liz Bynan, the clinical dietitian at Park City Medical Center.

"Liz will present a 30-minute interactive lecture in our training room for those who attend," Taylor said. "People can come into the store and they will be guided by the staff to the room. Afterwards, we’ll have a walk about throughout the store, and Liz will talk as we go through each of the areas."

Bynan will discuss the differences between organic and inorganic foods and address the special dietary needs for vegetarians.

"We have many vegetarians in our community and they may not always be getting the full nutrition that they need," Taylor said.

Another topic will be about frozen foods and meals of convenience.

"It’s important with the lifestyle of families these days for them to have an easily cooked meal that still provides full nutrition," Taylor said. "So, we’ll discuss what options they have to create a simple, but healthy meal."

Lastly, Bynan will talk about vitamins and other nutrition supplements and how those fit in with the wellness plans of people’s lives.

"We’ll also have staff that will answer any questions in the different areas, including the pharmacy," said store manager Michael Donahue. "This event is unique to the Park City Walmart."

"We are hoping to make this a quarterly event and want to hold these seminars throughout the year," Taylor said.
