Wildcats named to all-star team

Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

It was surprising year for the South Summit High School volleyball team. After coming in second in the Region playoffs, the Wildcats went to state not even ranked in the top five, and came out with second place.

"Coming into the season, I told my family that this team could be in the state playoffs this year," coach Becky Dees said. "I think (my family) truly though that was what I was supposed to say. But I believed we could do this from the beginning if we were willing to put in the work."

That hard work paid off for the girls who not only excelled as a team in the playoffs, but excelled individually, as well. Megan Peterson, Emily Kueser and McKenzie Woolstenhulme were awarded for their efforts by being named to the 2A All-State Tournament Team and the All-Region Team. Paige Peterson was named to the Highland Tournament Team.

Woolstenhulme credited her team and coaches for what she said was her "best year ever."

"Before we started, we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy road," she said. "We never thought it would be."

Kueser said although it was a great year, it’s going to be hard to let go.

"We would like to thank our seniors for an unforgettable year," she said. "We are going to miss (the seniors) a lot."

This year marked the first time the team has brought home a trophy in nine years. Overall, the Wildcats had 20 wins and 13 losses, beating out big schools like Olympus, West Jordan, Wasatch, Desert Hills, Ogden, Ben Lommond and Tooele.

"I think it’s amazing that we were able to do it," Woolstenhulme said. "Our coach really believed in us. We never would have gotten where we did without her."
