Wrestling team drops the Braves

Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

The Park City High School Miners wrestling team defeated the North Summit Braves 51-29 in the Miners’ final home match of the season Jan. 20. And despite the Braves having to forfeit several matches, Miners’ coach Brenan Cole said the Miners still would have won the dual.

Patton Magee, Brandon Woolstenhulme, Cole Quitiquit, Andy Richardson and Skyler Barkdull all won their matches.

"They’re doing really well," Cole said of the team, talking in a raspy voice during a phone interview on Thursday. Cole said he always loses his voice the day after a dual. "I’m a pretty intense coach. (Assistant coach George Rocci) and I were standing the whole time. We’re pretty much the cheerleaders for our team."

Cole said the Miners struggled early in the year because many of the athletes didn’t show up routinely for practice. That problem resolved itself after the Christmas break, he said, and now the athletes are showing up to practice and winning most of their matches.

"To see their improvement from the beginning of the year until now, it’s really impressive," he said. "These guys were barely winning at the beginning of the season, and now they’re doing really well."

This was the final home dual for seniors Maddy Magee, Cash Knight, Justus Minardi, Gianno Spera, Qutiquit, Richardson, Barkdull and Colin Root. The Miners will travel to Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jan. 22-23, where Cole coached previously.
