Wrestling team takes first trophy

Jen Watkins, Of the Record staff

Last weekend, the Park City High School wrestling team took home its first team trophy since the program was revived in 1997.

Assistant coach Doug Payne, who restarted the wrestling team after moving to Park City and discovering that the program had been shut down, said the new team has never even had a first-place finish. Until now.

In a "senior-led effort," the Miners traveled to Milford on Jan. 15-16 to beat out 11 other schools. Every senior who went finished in the top three in his respective weight class, he said.

"We were just really amazed," Payne said. "I was nervous about Cedar City and Panguitch."

But the Miners not only defeated Cedar City, which took second place, they won convincingly, scoring a total of 161 points to Cedar City’s 118.

Maddie Magee (119) and Cache Knight (heavyweight) each took first place. Brandon Woolstenhulme (112), Mitch Freckleton (215) and Skyler Barkdull (171) took second place. Justus Mindardi (130), Colin Root (145), Gianno Spera (135) and Cole Quitiquit (152) took third.

Senior night will be held at the Miners’ final home match on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. against North Summit. The Region dual meet will be held at Union on Jan. 27.

"Region will be a good test for us," Payne said "Wasatch will be favored. Carbon is also very tough. We’re shooting to try and get third against Union."
