PCHS Class of 2006 leaves an outstanding legacy

PR

Like the 306 graduates of the Park City High School Class of 2006, as well as their friends and families, we will hope for sunshine on Friday. With their alma mater in the throes of a massive remodel, it would be nice to ensure their memories of the ceremony are played against a backdrop of mountain scenery at The Canyons rather than the construction debris that currently dominates the PCHS campus.

This class deserves a warm and sunny sendoff. They are among the first graduates of the Park City School District’s International Baccalaureate program and they are veterans of countless community service-oriented programs including Key Club, the JumpIn! leadership class and Interact. Many of these students have interned at local businesses and volunteered with area nonprofits and their energy and optimism will be missed as they head off on new endeavors.

Throughout their school years, these students have met and exceeded the community’s increasing expectations. Today, thanks to their achievements in sports and academics, Park City can boast that its schools are among the best in the country.

In addition to their social conscience and willingness to work hard, we are particularly proud that this class represents diverse cultures and viewpoints.

Among the members of this class are several children of immigrants who have earned their high school diplomas and, thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of a former Park City High School teacher and a state legislator, are now eligible for in-state college tuition discounts.

We also applaud the high school’s valedictorian, a young man who served as the leader of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance and received a number of accolades for his academic accomplishments. His commitment to his convictions, along with his activism in many school activities, was a refreshing voice in a state that often discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation.

The Park City Class of 2006 has taught the community many lessons about generosity, dedication and sportsmanship and we hope that they will return often to share their experiences around the world in the years to come.

School district must lead

Park City School District is being investigated by the federal Office of Civil Rights for persistent and ongoing violations. It’s a very big deal that has a lot of our community on edge.
