Regardless of your candidate, make sure you’re registered

The Park Record Editorial, Oct. 16-18, 2013

Whether you like Andy Beerman or Jack Thomas, the two mayoral candidates in Park City, will be irrelevant as the voting begins shortly if you are not registered to vote.

Same goes for your favorite Park City Council candidates.

As Park City reaches the final weeks of what has been a mild-mannered campaign, it is important that people intending to vote on Election Day ensure they are registered to do so.

Registration this year might not be a question mark for many, given there was widespread interest in the presidential election in 2012, and someone registered then will almost certainly still be on the voter rolls.

But others must be aware of the fast-approaching deadline. The final day someone may register to vote and be eligible to cast a ballot this year is Oct. 21, next Monday. If people register after that deadline, their names would be on the voter rolls, but they will not be allowed to cast ballots this year.

Sharon Bauman, the elections officer in Park City, recommends people register in person at City Hall at this point, rather than using the state’s voting website, to ensure the paperwork is readily available in Park City. Office hours are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., weekdays.

Some of the state requirements for voter eligibility include being a U.S. citizen, being at least 18 years old by Election Day and being a resident for at least 30 days prior to the election. People registering to vote must also provide acceptable government-issued identification, such as a driver license or passport.

For more information about registering to vote in the City Hall election, contact Bauman at 615-5184 or bauman@parkcity.org .

The City Hall election has been the most closely-watched this year, but there are municipal elections in East Side cities as well. The deadline for voters in those cities is the same. More information is available by calling those cities. The phone numbers are:

  • Coalville, 336-5981
  • Francis, 783-6236
  • Henefer, 336-5365
  • Kamas, 783-4630
  • Oakley, 783-5734
  • Be sure you are able to cast a ballot on Election Day, regardless of the candidate you support.
