Deer Valley opens Saturday
December 2, 2014
Editor’s note: On Weds. Deer Valley announced the resort will open with nine chairlifts and 10 ski runs, on two mountains. Lifts scheduled to open include: Burns, Snowflake, Carpenter Express, Silver Lake Express, Homestake, Sterling Express, Wasatch Express, Judge and Viking. Early-season lift ticket prices are: Adult – $92/$77 (full /half day), Senior – $66/$56 (full/half day); Child – $58/$48 ((full/half day)
Deer Valley’s peaks are covered in snow, as are many of its signature runs ahead of opening day, which will be Saturday, Dec. 6.
The third and final Park City ski area to open for the season, Deer Valley has reason to believe plenty of terrain will be available for skiers during opening weekend.
Though official numbers of lifts and runs opening this weekend won’t be available until later in the week, Communications Manager Emily Summers said there are a couple areas the resort is targeting.
"Anticipate both Snow Park and Silver Lake areas [opening] and watch for updated runs/lifts on Deer Valley’s Facebook page on Wednesday," she said. "But we have had fantastic early-season snow (both natural and good snowmaking conditions)."
Highlighting opening weekend for the 23rd year is the annual Celebrity Ski Fest, which will feature celebrities including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cheryl Hines, Giancarlo Esposito, Rachel Harris and others. Races will take place Saturday and Sunday from 12-2 p.m. The race will then be televised on CBS on Sunday, Dec. 14, after the day’s NFL games.

"Kicking off Deer Valley’s ski season with the Celebrity Skifest event is a great way to welcome our guests back each year," Deer Valley President and General Manager Bob Wheaton said in a press release. "This event has become a tradition for our opening weekend and allows us to help support Waterkeeper Alliance, a nonprofit organization we feel strongly about."
Waterkeeper Alliance is a group that works to protect the world’s water supply, defending communities against "law-breaking polluters and unresponsive government agencies."
A special concert by Lady Antebellum will be part of the weekend’s fundraising events for Waterkeeper Alliance and will take place at the Montage for ticket holders only.
Summers also noted opening-weekend food specials, particularly at the Mariposa. From Dec. 5-18, purchase two small plates and get the third free. She also said The Brass Tag, Deer Valley’s newest restaurant, located in The Lodges at Deer Valley, will open at 3 p.m. for Après ski.
With so much going on during opening weekend, Summers said the resort is abuzz waiting to open the slopes.
"Opening with good snow coverage always makes us a little more antsy to get skiing," she said. "Our season employees have been returning over the last month or more and they bring such a sense of excitement. It’s always fun to welcome them back and start gearing up for winter!"
