Head for the beaches of Deer Valley

With two of three Park City ski resorts closing this weekend, and the third to follow next weekend, warm weather is just around the corner.

That means it’s almost time to break out the paddleboards and tour some of Park City’s best reservoirs, lakes and ponds.

Park City Standup Paddleboarding (PC SUP) will be back at its lower Deer Valley Drive location for a second season, offering paddleboard rentals and SUP yoga and fitness classes.

This season, though, instead of loading paddleboards into the Deer Valley ponds via a makeshift dock, a beach area will be installed for easier access to the water.

"April 26 is our target installation date for that," PC SUP founder Trent Hickman said. "We’re inviting the local community to come out and have fun and help put in the beach. Everyone who comes out will get a shirt that says ‘I built the beach in 2014.’

"The purpose of that is just to improve access to the water," he continued. "When you’re up there, you kind of have to go down and put your board over the dock and climb down. It’s definitely less convenient than it would be if you could just pull up right to the grass and jump off your board."

In addition to the classes and rentals available at the Deer Valley location, Hickman said this year, PC SUP will be offering more.

"We’re going to push strongly our trips down the Weber River and our tours out at the Jordanelle," he said. "We’re also offering standup paddle fishing tours at the Jordanelle we can either paddle to a location and then still-cast off the boards, or, my favorite way to do it is you throw out a lure and troll. It’s a really fun way to fish and kids love fishing off the paddleboards."

But touring and cruising aren’t the only things you can do on a paddleboard PC SUP offers three races over the course of the summer. The PC SUP Cup, on Aug. 2 and 3, returns for a second year, and the Paddle/Pedal/Paddle, featuring two legs of paddleboarding and one leg of cycling, will be held the following Saturday, Aug. 9.

"We’re bookending the Outdoor Retailer show and trying to build up the event a little bit and hopefully get some top-level racers and riders coming out while they’re in town to support their brands for the show," Hickman said. "The campaign is built around Outdoor Retailer, so our philosophy is, if you’re coming to Utah for the convention, come a little early and stay a little late to partake in some outdoor recreation in Park City."

The SUP Cup has several sponsors returning for another year, including Albion Financial, which will sponsor the Albion Dash for the Cash at each SUP Cup race, and Chesley Electric. Proceeds from the races will benefit the Park City Recycling Center, the Park City Education Foundation and the Park City Foundation.
