Miners dominant in home opener

For Park City senior pitcher Cole Tan, there really is no place like home.

Playing on the Park City High School field, the biggest ballpark in the state, the left-handed hurler was able to contain the Uintah Utes on Thursday afternoon en route to a 14-3 victory.

In five innings, he didn’t walk a single batter, forcing the Utes to put the ball in play. His defense took care of the rest.

"I was just thinking ‘Throw strikes, throw strikes,’" Tan said. "That’s our big philosophy – get ahead in the count and let the defense make the plays behind me."

He added that the weather conditions worked in his favor as well.

"It’s a big ballpark and the wind was blowing in – no one was going to hit it out today," he said. "I could make a couple mistakes and have them caught instead of hit for home runs."

"It’s a pitcher’s paradise here," Park City coach Lou Green added. "They hit it up in the air and he’s fine. If he can keep his pitches in the zone like that, he’s going to be really tough to beat."

After Tan allowed a run in the top of the first inning, the Miners’ offense picked him up in the bottom of the frame, scoring seven runs.

Chandler Anderson and Chandler Barkdull each had a two-run double, Scott Stokes added a two-run single and Blake Morin chipped in with an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Tan appreciated the support.

"It’s so easy to pitch with a big lead," he said. "It’s a whole different approach."

The Miners added seven more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ian Moritz and Stokes had RBI singles, Morin had a two-run double, TJ Mayo had a two-run single and Tim Leary drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

Green said it was nice to see the bottom of the order contribute to a very balanced offensive attack.

"We saw the end of our lineup come up big," he said. "It’s good to see some of those bats get going."

The Miners are now 2-0 in Region 10 play following a 2-0 victory at Uintah on Wednesday afternoon. Mark Trevino picked up the victory in a game Green said the Miners were lucky to win.

"We had three hits and made three errors and found a way to win," he said. "That’s just part of the game."

He credited Trevino for carrying the Miners on a day when neither offense seemed to be working.

"He did everything we needed him to do," Green said. "He was as good as I’ve ever seen him."

He added that being 2-0 in region play is a big confidence booster for the rest of the year.

"I’m happy with the sweep (of Uintah)," he said. "It sets a good tone for us, but we’ve got eight more games to win."

Next, the Miners will take on Union. The game is scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at PCHS.
