Miners struggle in 3A volleyball tourney

Things got off to a roaring start for the Park City High School volleyball team at the 3A state tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Squaring off against Carbon in the first round at Utah Valley University in Orem, the Miners rolled to an easy 25-13 first-set victory. They followed that effort up with a hard-fought 25-23 win in the second set before clinching the match in straight sets with a 25-17 third-set win.

In game two, against Dixie, the tournament started slipping away from Park City. The Flyers won the first game 25-17. Park City managed to battle back with a 25-21 victory in the second set before losing two straight heartbreaking sets 25-23 and 25-20 to lose the match 3-1.

In the one-loss bracket on Thursday morning, the Miners looked defeated against Region 10 foe Union. Playing against a squad they swept in the two region matches this season, the Miners couldn’t gain any momentum en route to losing the elimination game 3-0.

Union took the first set 25-20, held off a Park City rally in the second set to win 25-23 and cruised to an easy 25-19 victory in set three.

The Miners finished the season with a record of 17-11, including tournament play.
