NASTAR director joins USSA

USSA News Bureau,

Longtime NASTAR Director of Operations Bill Madsen has joined the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) to continue to manage NASTAR’s operations alongside USSA’s events department. Earlier this summer, the U.S. Ski Team and NASTAR announced their plans to enter into an agreement under which the U.S. Ski Team will assume operational management of NASTAR.

"Bill has done a remarkable job managing NASTAR and the USSA is committed to maintaining that level of professionalism moving forward," said USSA President and CEO Tiger Shaw. "He will be an invaluable asset to the USSA events team as we gear up for another season of NASTAR racing."

Madsen, who has been involved with NASTAR for over 25 years, helped grow NASTAR to be the largest public grassroots ski race program in the world. The program currently exists at 115 resorts across North America. The U.S. Ski Team’s integration with NASTAR is designed to build on Madsen’s efforts, capitalizing on the global success of USSA athletes to bring greater awareness to the sport and value to the industry, while motivating participants of all ages to get involved in ski racing.

"NASTAR’s alignment with the U.S. Ski Team unites all alpine racers under one roof and is an opportunity to promote the sport as a whole," stated Madsen. "This change provides young kids and adult racers with an opportunity to engage with their heroes who inspire and motivate them to stay excited about and involved with the sport."

The USSA plans to administer the NASTAR program though its events department, which has a strong background in managing major national and international events. Aspen-based Madsen will continue his day-to-day management of the program while working with the USSA to further integrate U.S. Ski Team athletes and create opportunities for partnerships.

"Since its inception in 1968, NASTAR has been a gateway for people to become passionate about competitive skiing," said Madsen. "I look forward to working with the USSA to grow what we’ve already established."
