North Summit sophomore Kasidee Evans was scanning the Deseret News’s website when she happened across her name.

Unbeknownst to her, she had been named to the All-State Girls’ Basketball Honorable Mention Team for the 2012-13 season.

Evans said seeing her name listed was a surprise, given her team’s struggles toward the end of the year.

"I didn’t think it would happen this year because we didn’t make it to (the) state (tournament)," she said.

Evans averaged 14.1 points per game during the year, finishing as the second-leading scorer in 2A girls’ basketball. She also averaged 3.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game for the Braves.

She said being on the honorable mention team has motivated her to make sure she keeps improving her game.

"I like having all my work pay off in the end," she said. "It’s a good feeling being rewarded for all the work that you put in."

She added that she’s excited for next season, when she hopes the Braves will be able to fight their way into the playoff picture.

"I think our team is going to be pretty good next year," she said.

A lack of size will be a problem for North Summit, she said, but she thinks her team will be able to overcome it.

"We’re going to need to work on rebounding. But we’re going to have good scorers and we’re going to be quick."

Overall, Evans just hopes to have fun and continue growing as a team.

"I hope we can have a successful next two years," she said.

The 2A All-State teams were voted on by the 2A coaches.
