Oakley Rodeo successful once again

A July fixture in Oakley, the Oakley Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo once again drew many fans and tourists to the area this year.

After four days filled with events like rodeo performances, a parade, a youth rodeo and a 5K, the rodeo committee thinks overall profits were up once again this year, though official numbers won’t be available for a couple weeks.

Andy Woolstenhulme, a rodeo committee member, said the group couldn’t have asked for better weather.

"Everything went really well," he said. "We had a little rain on Saturday, but it didn’t seem like anybody left. The stands were still pretty full."

He added that box office sales were right where the committee expected them to be.

"I would say it was another successful year," he said. "Ticket sales were at least comparable to last year, and last year we were up 15 percent from the previous year."

Increasing the overall prize money pool for the rodeo competitors helped the rodeo increase its brand as well, Woolstenhulme said.

"We were excited both with the quality and number of contestants that entered," he said. "They were from all over the country. That’s exciting, and it helps with our turnouts."

Even the auxiliary events drew plenty of fans, he added.

"Attendance at the parade was great," he said. "A lot of people were enjoying the cooler weather. And the Oakley Remembers Exceptional Rodeo on Wednesday was great."

Woolstenhulme said the committee will look to keep the exceptional rodeo, which featured 25 handicapped competitors raising funds for the nonprofit Ele Lembra Foundation, which supports orphanages and youths who age out of orphanages.

"We’re excited about the money we were able to give each night," he said. "Raising money for an organization that supports a great cause is something we’d like to continue."

Landon McClaugherty captured the all-around cowboy title, winning the team roping competition with teammate Tommy Zuniga and finishing in a tie for tenth place in the tie-down roping competition.
