January 18, 2014
The Park City Ski Team (PCST) dominated the competition in the first South Series race of the season at Snowbasin Ski Resort, taking home nearly half of the medals with a total of 30. PCST had athletes from Devo, under-12, U14 and Warrior levels that formed a team of over 90 competing during the two-day giant slalom race series.
On Saturday, the weather was mild and held out to provide consistent conditions for the racers. For the girls’ U10 division, Emerson Glusker earned fifth place. For the U12 girls, it was Samantha Wilkinson in first, Ani Jensen in second and Lauren Macuga and Rebekah Brain tied for fifth. In the U14 girls’ division, Ella Dingman earned second, Helena Croise third and Grace Dalton fifth. In the boys’ U10 division, Stefan Brennwald raced to second place and Espen Hunt took fourth. In the deep U12 age division, Tommy Hoffman earned first, Jack Schaede fourth and Jack Pollard fifth. In the U14 boys, Lucas Brennwald captured fourth place.
On Sunday, the racers battled both the course and tough weather conditions with snow and fierce winds. For the second GS day, PCST U12 girls did a repeat with Samantha Wilkinson, Ani Jenson and Lauren Macuga in first, second and fifth, respectively. In the U14 category, it was Andi Carnell (1), Lauren Long (2) and Helena Croise (5). For the U10 boys, Stefan Brennwald came in first and Espen Hunt in fifth. The U12 boys brought home four of the five medals with Tommy Hoffman in second, Gunnar Travis in third, Jack Pollard in fourth and Jack Schaede in fifth. Like the dominating U12 boys, the U14 division saw Cooper Iacobelli finish second, Sam Levine third, Clark Bigatel fourth and Lucas Brennwald fifth.
Brooke Blackburn, a PCST U14 coach, said, "The race went very smoothly and the kids were excited for their first race of the season. Both the girls and boys went home with some impressive results and represented PCST proudly."
The next South Series Race will be held at Park City Mountain Resort on Feb. 1 and 2. Devos, U12 and Warrior racers will be competing in the slalom events.
