PCHS tennis team sweeps Region 10 titles
Coming into Friday and Saturday’s Region 10 tournament at the PC MARC, the Park City High School girls’ tennis team had yet to drop a set in region play.
That streak continued over the weekend, as the Miners won region titles in all five classifications, sweeping each of the 10 matches they played on Friday and Saturday.
No. 1 singles player Taylor Matz defeated opponents from Morgan and Uintah en route to the title, No. 2 singles player Kylie Schwalbe defeated a Morgan player and a Union player and No. 3 singles player Jessica Santos defeated a Uintah player in the semifinals and a Morgan player in the finals.
On the doubles side, the No. 1 team of Natalie Beal and Julianna Signor battled their way to victory against a Juan Diego squad and a team from Union while No. 2 doubles players Marina Mayo and Sierra Wakefield earned victories over opponents from Union and Morgan.
Park City coach Tamarin Espinoza said it was important for the team’s confidence to finish off the Region 10 sweep.
"That was nice," she said. "I’m so proud of the way they stepped up. They did great. We had a couple close calls, but they got it done."
Espinoza said she was especially pleased with the way Beal and Signor cruised to the No. 1 doubles title.
"Today, the most-impressive award goes to Natalie Beal and Julianna Signor," she said on Saturday. "They played the best tennis I’ve seen them play in region so far. It was nice for them to get that region win for Natalie going out as a senior and Julianna coming in as a freshman. Going into state, where the competition is going to be tougher, they’re going to have to step up even more, but they definitely stepped up today."
Espinoza said the victories for the seniors were great, but she noted that it was big for Matz and Signor, both freshmen, to pick up region wins as well.
"It’s a great feeling for me as a first-year coach, even," she laughed. "I don’t even know what it’s like for them at 14 years old. Julianna’s not one of those people that show their emotions, so it was nice to see her get excited today and shed a smile. It’s great for those freshmen to be a part of this and for the senior class that they learned so much from."
For Schwalbe, who has had an up-and-down season, Espinoza said it was nice to see her turn in a dominant performance.
"She was on this weekend," she said. "I don’t know if that was just being on the home courts or being fresh or not having to go to school, but this was the best I’ve seen Kylie play this season."
Though Espinoza wasn’t worried about Santos’ ability coming into the Region 10 tournament, she said having the senior quickly dispatch her opponents was nice, as Santos has been battling an elbow injury recently.
"She was hurting, but she trucked through," Espinoza said. "She’ll take a few days off. She doesn’t want to lose her stroke, but she’s more worried than I am. I’m not worried about her at all. She’ll be fine, as a senior. Her drive, knowing this is it for her, is enough to get her through it."
Santos reluctantly agreed with her coach.
"I think I might take a couple days off," she said.
But, she added, winning region as a team was something she wouldn’t have missed for the world.
"It was tough, but I just had to put [the injury] aside and give it all I had," she said. "It’s a great feeling because it’s my last year. I’m happy that we all won region and we’re looking forward to state. We’re anxious to see how we do."
The 3A girls’ state tournament will be held Oct. 10-11 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
