Reduce stress at the PC MARC

The PC MARC will host a three-part Stress Reduction Series at 11 a.m. on Sundays beginning April 17.

Park City Recreation is offering a three-part Stress Reduction Series to teach techniques that can be applied daily to achieve a happy, healthy and productive life. Sessions will be led by local experts in Systema, Feldenkrais Method, yoga and essential oils.

"After a busy winter season, this is the perfect time of year to de-stress before summer begins," said Dondea Sherer-Lykes, Park City Recreation’s Wellness Coordinator. "The experts we have lined up to lead each of the three sessions will inform participants on various techniques they can use to manage and reduce stress in our fast-paced environments. Individuals will then have the basic experience to determine which methods work best for them, or maybe they’ll find it’s a combination of all of them."

The sessions will take place at the PC MARC on Sundays — April 17, April 24 and May 1 — from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All ages are welcome.

The Stress Reduction Series will kick off with Rob Kidwell, a Systema and Breath Instructor, who has also studied Japanese Akido. His April 17 class will focus on methods for achieving a "working state" where peaceful awareness naturally replaces stress, tension and fear. He’ll reveal how to recognize stress and teach simple methods to melt it away.

Competitive triathlete and Guild Feldenkrais Practitioner Sharon Starika will lead the second session on April 24. While she is an exercise and fitness enthusiast, Starika will focus on gentle directional movement that works in concert with self-awareness to reduce stress.

Certified in yoga and an advocate of essential oils, Stephanie Engelbrecht will close out the series by teaching everyday tools for coping with stress with aromatherapy, easy yoga stretches and some breathing exercises.

"The yoga stretches will be easy enough for absolutely everyone to do — those who are older, younger and even new to yoga will benefit from and enjoy the class," Engelbrecht said. "We will spend time talking about breathing and how inhaling various aromas affect mood and emotions while helping us pay greater attention to our breath."
