Ben Saarel wins Dream Mile

Ben Saarel, a Park City High School senior, won the Dream Mile event in New York City on Saturday, May 25. He posted a personal-best time of four minutes, 2.72 seconds, topping the second-place runner by more than two seconds. The Dream Mile featured the top high school runners in the country competing at Icahn Stadium. Check out this Saturday’s Park Record for more coverage.

Guided Hike

The Park City area has the best trail system, so come explore with Basin Recreation’s first guided hike of the season this Saturday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Gorgoza trailhead. Hikes last an hour and a half to two hours and the fitness staff will pick a different trail every few weeks for the rest of the summer. See website for a full list of dates. Soldier Hollow Youth Adventure Camp

Calling all children ages 8-10: It’s time to sign up for the Soldier Hollow Youth Adventure Camp. The camp, which features biathlons, hiking, games, swimming, indoor rock climbing, a ropes course, agility events and more, will have two sessions this summer: June 10-12 and July 8-10. Both sessions run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. The cost is $90, with an athletic shirt included. To register, visit

Bike to School

Start summer a bit early with a great bike ride. Celebrate Bike to School Day with Basin Recreation on May 31 at Trailside Elementary from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and at Ecker Hill Middle School from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. Send your kids to school on their bikes and they can enjoy a free breakfast when they arrive. Couples League at PC Golf Club

The Couples League, for beginning to advanced golfers, is new for 2013 at the Park City Golf Club. Handicaps are not used and you do not have to be a member of the UGA. It’s a great time, so come out and meet other golfers and enjoy the game. Please go to for more information.

PCHS Golf Meeting

Next year the PCHS boys’ golf team is looking to repeat as 3A state champions and the girls are looking to challenge as one of the top teams in 3A. If you are interested in the opportunities this summer, there will be meetings at the high school in George Murphy’s room, #127, next to the library. The girls will meet at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, and the boys will meet at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, May 31. Summer tryouts will also be discussed. For more information, contact Coach Murphy at .

Super Short Triathlon

The annual Super Short Triathlon on Saturday, June 1, at Silver Mountain Sports Club is open to the public. Designed for both first timers and seasoned athletes, the Super Short combines swimming eight laps in the pool, riding six miles on indoor cycling bikes, and running one mile on the Rail Trail. Swim Lessons at Silver Mountain

Silver Mountain Sports Club is now accepting registrations for youth summer swim lessons and swim team. Morning, evening and Saturday lessons are available. The first session begins June 10 and the program continues through Aug. 15. There are eight half-hour swim lessons per two-week session and one instructor for every four kids. Summer Junior Tennis Camp

Summer camps at the PC MARC begin June 10 for beginner and intermediate players ages 7-14. Two-day, three-day and five-day camps are offered from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The $45 daily fee includes a T-shirt and prizes on "Game Day." For registration, visit or call 435-615-5400.

Mini Tennis Camp at PC MARC

For ages 3 to 7, Mini Camp at the PC MARC starts on June 1 with three sessions throughout the summer: June 1 to 29; July 1 to Aug. 3; and Aug. 5 to 24. Camp is held Sunday, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Tuesday or Thursday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Fee is $11 per class. For registration, visit or call 435-615-5400.

Youth Football Camp

Calling all youth football players ages 8-14. Back by popular demand, it’s summer football camp. Aaron Alford, a former University of Utah football coach, and Park City Youth Football are joining forces to teach youth players the basic fundamentals of football. The camp will be held July 1-2, 9-11:30 a.m., at Treasure Mountain Junior High School. Walk-up registration is 8-9 a.m. on July 1. This camp has historically sold out quickly. Please show up with cleats and water (no-pads camp). The cost: $30 for the first child, $20 for each additional child.

Aquafit at the PC MARC

Beginning June 10, instructors will offer a great cardio and water resistance-based workout at the PC MARC leisure pool. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. All levels and ages 16 and over are welcome. Skateboard Camp at Park City Skate Park

Park City Recreation has the area’s best skaters teaching children to skate this summer. Helmets and pads are required with equipment available upon request. Weekly morning sessions (Monday through Thursday) begin June 10 with classes for all levels including beginners only. Private and semi-private lessons are available. Fieldhouse Summer Pass Sale

Stay fit this summer at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse. All three-month passes are on sale through June 30: $80/individual, $145/couple, $70/senior, and $70/student with a valid ID. H.I.T. with Whit

Check out H.I.T. with Whit at Basin Recreation. Whitney Kozlowski combines strength exercise with cardio intervals, bands, balls, sprints, circuits, and plyometric training in this one-hour class. The program will run through June 27 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 a.m. at the Fieldhouse. Cost is $70 for 10 sessions (prepay only). Summer Swim Lessons

Park City Recreation offers summer swim lessons for all age groups and ability levels, six months to 13 years. There are various session lengths and day options on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays. Sessions begin June 8. Register now as class sizes are limited. Visit or call 435-615-5400.

35th Annual Soccer Camps

Coach Randy Farris returns to offer a camp for soccer skill development with fun games, challenges, scrimmages and competitions for kids ages 7 to 15. Camp dates are June 17-21 (deadline June 13), June 24-28 (deadline June 20) and July 8-12 (deadline July 3). Morning session is $85 and full day is $160. Summer Sand Doubles Volleyball

The Summer Sand Doubles Volleyball will feature two divisions of 2v2 play with rally scoring and best of three matches. The top three teams from each division will take home prizes. League play begins June 16, noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays at City Park Sand Courts. Registration deadline is June 9, which is also the free agent/drop in night. Park City Soccer Club is holding free competitive team tryouts May 28-June 1 at Trailside Park. Park City Soccer Club offers competitive soccer programs for boys and girls age 6-18. Youth/Adult Dirt Jump Camps

Park City Recreation will hold youth and adult dirt jump camps and clinics throughout the summer at the Park City Dirt Jump Park. Dirt jump instructors will help riders advance in the sport of progressive mountain biking. Sessions are an hour a day for three days, Monday-Wednesday. Adventure Camp

Park City Recreation offers a challenging all-day adventure camp for ages 9-14 this summer with six Monday-through-Friday sessions. Summer Day Camp

Park City Recreation’s professional staff will guide your child age 6-12 through exciting summer days filled with sports, games, arts & crafts and field trips. It’s time to sign up for summer camps. Come for a day, a week, or the whole summer for new and classic Basin Recreation adventures.
