Tiny Tri back for second year

Last year, Park City Recreation decided to give people who wanted to experience a triathlon, but who didn’t have the stamina or training required for a full triathlon, a chance to see what one was like.

So the Tiny Triathlon, an event designed to give youth and beginners a chance to attempt a triathlon, was born.

Recreation supervisor Karen Yocum said she was pleased with how popular the event was in year one.

"I wasn’t sure how much participation we’d have last year," she said. "We had almost 50 people, mostly youth, and then about 12 adults."

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 14, and will start at the PC MARC at 9:15 a.m.

It is a joint effort between Park City Recreation and the Park City Triathlon Club, with several of the club’s sponsors providing prizes and volunteer support for the athletes.

After running the events in inverse order from a regular triathlon last year (run then bike then swim), Yocum said this year’s event will be similar to a regular triathlon.

"I’ve made some adjustments to try to increase participation," she said. "Last year, we ran the event backwards and it had mixed reviews. People felt it was really, really hard to swim at the end, because triathletes are usually better runners than swimmers, it seems."

This year, the athletes will start with the swimming portion of the race, 300 yards for the beginners (ages 15 and up) and 100 yards for youth (ages 7-14). Next will be a six-mile bike ride for the beginners and a 1.5-mile ride for the youth. Finally, the beginners will embark on a 1.5-mile run while the youth finish up with a half-mile jog.

Registration has been a little slower than Yocum would have liked up to this point, but she’s optimistic that there will be a late push in the next week.

"I was really hoping to have more," she said. "Registration has been slow. But we have the last day of youth soccer camp tomorrow, so we’re hoping to get some participation out of that group and the youth swimming program starts soon, so we’re hoping for participation out of that, too.

"A lot of people decide really late about things like this."

There are two ways to register, Yocum said.

"They can register online at http://www.parkcityrecreation.org or come to the MARC," she said. "If you pre-register, it’s $30 for the beginners and youth is $20. Day-of registration increases to $35 and $25."
