Town Race Series returns to PCMR
January 23, 2015
The Town Race Series is back for its fifth year in 2015, but this season of races will be a little bit different than in years past.
For starters, the four races — held on Jan. 26, Feb. 9, March 2 and March 9 at Park City Mountain Resort — are on Mondays this year after traditionally being held on Wednesday evenings.
Second, Park City Ski Team Director Jesse Hunt said, the giant slalom-style races will feature gates a little closer together this season.
"The courses are going to be more geared for less experienced racers," he said. "The gates will be closer together, which will make it a little easier for people who are less experienced. We’re going to be a little in between a GS and a slalom."
Though Park City boasts a high level of former and current professional skiers per capita, Hunt said skiers of all abilities are welcome to participate in the Town Races.
"Though this is one of the most competitive race series in the country, there’s a place for everybody," he said. "It’s more about getting out and enjoying the sport than it is about winning. If you’re a beginner or if you’re a very experienced racer, there’s a place for you."

Prizes will be awarded in four different categories — platinum, gold, silver and bronze. Platinum will be the category for the most experienced racers, while the bronze category is the best for beginners.
Hunt said the platinum category is always hotly contested between both former and current greats.
"It’s fun to get everybody out and there’s a strong group of skiers in town," he said. "These races are attractive to those people who have been great skiers or those who continue to train. There are a number of Park City Ski Team alumni who enjoy it as well."
Though a recent slate of college alpine races had to be moved from the Eagle Race Arena to the PayDay run, Hunt said Eagle is ready to go for Monday evening.
"It’s in shape now, awesome shape," he said. "We’re enjoying some great training conditions — that’s all really good."
Everyone, racers and spectators alike, is invited to the after-parties following the races, which run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The awards parties will be held in the PCMR base area at Corner Store on Jan. 26 and March 2 and at The Pig Pen Saloon on Feb. 9 and March 9.
"We get celebrities at our after-parties with ex-Olympians and this and that," Hunt said. "It’s always fun at our award parties. People are welcome to come to that to join in on the excitement."
The Eagle Race Arena is open to racers from 3-6 p.m. each Monday for the race series. It costs $20 to sign up for an individual race or $60 for all four. Team scoring is available as well. For more information on the Town Race Series, visit http://www.parkcityskiteam.org .
