Motorized bikes don’t belong on our trails

Today, Saturday, July 29, I hiked from my home near White Pine Canyon Road and S.R. 224 to Holiday Village Cinema to see a 1:10 p.m. matinee.

From that intersection, along the northern multi-use paved trail, until the intersection of Meadows Drive and 224, I did not encounter another pedestrian, strolling, hiking, pushing strollers or walking a pet. This section spans over a mile, passing the White Barn on the south side of 224, until a traffic controlled light at Meadows.

I was fearful during this 25 minute section of my hike. The trail at that time was not multi-use — as it has been for the many years I’ve used this paved trail as a pedestrian.

This section was fully dominated by dozens of bicycles, the vast majority motorized. The speed of these motorized vehicles, undeterred by the slope of the trail, created close calls between oncoming and ongoing bicycles, and forced me off the trail several times.

My sense was that many of the operators were unskilled, shouting warnings to me to move over. They seemed unable to slow to accommodate me as a pedestrian.

At Meadows and 224, I opted for a pedestrian-only route.

I do not bicycle but have never had a problem sharing our multi-use, year round trails with people-powered road, mountain and snow bikes.

Motorized bikes present a hazard. They should not be allowed on our beloved multi-use trails.
