Sheriff’s Report: AirTag helps deputies with recovery of stolen vehicle

Summit County deputies helped recover a stolen vehicle with the help of an AirTag last week.

The registered owner was tracking the car with the Apple device used to help people find personal objects, according to a Wednesday report from the Sheriff’s Office. The Murray Police Department contacted local deputies for their help in locating the stolen car.

The AirTag location led deputies to Outlets Park City, where they found the car in a parking lot. The driver was arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail on several charges, including unlawful possession of a financial card, possession of stolen property and drug paraphernalia. 



The vehicle was returned to the registered owner.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, April 8, and Sunday, April 14, including reports of driving under the influence, public intoxication and active warrants.



Saturday, April 13

Deputies responded to a report of an intoxicated person damaging property in Canyons Village. The individual was located and arrested.

A vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 was stopped for failure to stay in one lane. Deputies spoke with the driver, who smelled strongly of alcohol. Deputies investigated, and the driver admitted to drinking a few beers. The driver agreed to participate in a standardized field sobriety test, on which he performed poorly. The driver submitted a breath test with a positive reading for alcohol. Deputies arrested him for DUI and transported him to the Summit County Jail. 

Friday, April 12

A vehicle was stopped near Kimball Junction for a moving violation. Deputies also discovered the driver had an active warrant. A K9 sniff conducted on the vehicle lead to a probable cause search. The driver was found in possession of drug paraphernalia and multiple controlled substances. The individual was arrested on several charges. 

Wednesday, April 10

Deputies were dispatched to Kimball Junction twice for an intoxicated man. Deputies determined the man was likely to continue to be the subject of reports and arrested him. The man was charged with intoxication and criminal trespassing at the time of his booking.

A reckless driver was reported traveling eastbound on S.R. 40 near mile marker three. Deputies located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop for failure to maintain a lane. The driver displayed obvious signs of impairment when deputies approached him, and he smelled of alcohol. The man agreed to participate in a field sobriety test, which he failed. He was arrested under suspicion of drunk driving. Deputies also charged him with an open container. Deputies impounded the vehicle.

Tuesday, April 9

The registered owner of a vehicle driving near Canyons Village was linked to an active warrant for assault and criminal mischief, so deputies stopped the car. The driver was arrested, and deputies released the vehicle to the man’s girlfriend.

A man was sitting in his car in the back parking lot of a motel in Kimball Junction. Deputies observed drug paraphernalia in plain view on the driver seat. Deputies found a stolen handgun and methamphetamine during a search. They arrested the man on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

Monday, April 8

Deputies stopped a vehicle with an expired registration in Coalville. They started a DUI investigation after speaking with the driver. They ultimately arrested the man under suspicion of drunk driving. He also faces open container, driving on a denied license and alcohol restricted charges. A blood draw was performed when the driver arrived at the Summit County Jail.

A woman with active warrants was taken into custody.
