Park City traffic patrols net numerous drivers as stop sign cases mount

Police officers pull over vehicles at several intersections in Park Meadows

The Park City Police Department in early April continued to heavily patrol streets in various locations, stopping numerous drivers for suspected violations that included failing to stop at stop signs.

The police have long patrolled streets in neighborhoods as well as on the entryways, and traffic stops have been mounting for months. Speeding and other moving violations for years have been one of the chief law enforcement-related complaints of Parkites.

There appeared to be several concentrated traffic patrols in earlier this month. One of them occurred in Park Meadows during the afternoon and early evening on April 11. The police stopped six drivers in a 51-minute period starting at 4:20 p.m.

Public police logs indicated an officer was “monitoring” stop signs at the Meadows Drive-Fairway Village Drive intersection when the motorists were pulled over. At least five of the drivers were on Meadows Drive at the time the officer observed them.

The logs did not provide details about any enforcement action. It is believed the police typically issue warnings to drivers unless a violation is deemed to be egregious or the person is a repeat offender.

There was also a concentration of traffic stops on April 9 at the intersection of Monitor Drive and Lucky John Drive. The police that evening were monitoring the intersection for drivers failing to obey stop signs.

Some of the other traffic-related cases recently reported by the Police Department included:

• On April 13 at 9:06 p.m., an officer stopped a driver after the person, according to public police logs, made a “wide right turn” onto Park Avenue, apparently from 15th Street. The person also drove on a sidewalk, the police said.

• On April 12 at 7:31 p.m., an officer stopped a driver in the area of the intersection of Park Avenue and Thaynes Canyon Drive after observing the speed at 60 mph in a location where the posted limit is 40 mph.

• On April 11 at 10:35 p.m., an officer pulled over a driver in the area of the intersection of Park Avenue and Prospector Drive, indicating the vehicle was traveling at 60 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.

• On April 11 at 9 p.m., an officer stopped a vehicle after seeing the taillights were not illuminated. The stop was in the area of the intersection of S.R. 224 and Bobsled Boulevard, which is located outside of the Park City limits.

•  On April 11 at 7:23 p.m., an officer clocked a driver traveling at 68 mph in a location in the area of the intersection of S.R. 224 and Meadows Drive where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. The officer issued a citation.

• On April 11 at 5:45 p.m., an officer pulled over a driver on Lucky John Drive after observing the license plate did not have month or year stickers.

• On April 9 at 7:33 p.m., an officer pulled over what was described as a “multicolored van” on Monitor Drive. There was an obstructed license plate, the police said. The officer who stopped the van was monitoring stop signs at the Lucky John Drive intersection.
